Does this picture look familiar? It looks almost identical to the one I posted on the Asia blog when I announced we were moving however I stole it from the internet - this one is the real thing :)
Sidi Bou Said is a small town close by that is literally all white buildings and all blue shutters, doors, and windows. It's so darling and has such a quaint, charming feel. Not to mention it's right on the water so the views are pretty great as well. I remember I would see photos of the town online before I ever moved here and it looks exactly the same - just beautiful!
The town is a huge tourist attraction so that is a slightly negative thing however it's so beautiful and unique - how could it not be? Cruise ships shuttle buses of people up to the little town where they can shop and buy lots of crafts from the local artists who set up shop in the tiny streets. I just love all the pottery. It's all hand painted and even in some of the shops you can see the guys painting the different types of pottery. It's not exactly cheap though - especially if you are a blonde girl with an American accent :) But I'm working on my bargaining skills so I can start my collection of Tunisian pottery!
There are a couple restaurants in Sidi Bou Said with beautiful views but plan to pay a pretty penny at some. When Alo and I first wondered around the town together we decided to stop and get a drink at the most "scenic" restaurant called Cafe Delices on the side of the hill. We order 2 fruit juices (no alcohol) that were small and paid 20 dinar ( approx $14 ) which for here is super expensive.
Here are some more photos to give you and idea of what the town looks like...
